The Newcastle United Blog | Newcastle Eyeing Scotland Under-19 International For Potential January Transfer – Report

Newcastle have had a productive summer with 8 signings, including 4 academy prospects. The club tried to strengthen further on deadline day but many goals proved out of reach, with Eddie Howe revealing Premier League clubs were reluctant to do business with the resurgent Magpies.

January could prove just as difficult, although Newcastle should be active again. The Scottish Sun reports that Rangers youngster Cole McKinnon could be targeted in the next window.

Newcastle have scouted the young midfielder, who is currently on loan at Patrick Thistle. They like what they see as the 19-year-old has performed very well in the Scottish Premier League with 2 goals and 1 assist in 6 appearances.

Rangers will want to keep their valuable midfielder, who still has three years left on his contract. McKinnon made his debut last May coming off the bench in a 3-1 win at Hearts. The teenager took little time to open his account by scoring a goal in the 81st minute.

The Scottish Under-19 international would be one of the future if he were poached in January or next summer. The club is focused on adding young talent. A deadline move for West Ham’s Harrison Ashby fell through but the promising right-back could hit the radar again this winter.
