The Newcastle United Blog | Howe makes a change to our planned squad for Everton

This is the team I predict Eddie Howe will name for Tuesday’s game against Everton. There is only one change from the 1-0 win at Leeds over two weeks ago.

Newcastle are coming off an extended break in which three new signings have been added since the last game. The victory at Leeds was only the second of this season and sent Newcastle buzzing into the break.

Since the win, Newcastle have added Matt Targett, Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes. The addition of Matt Targett is essential for tomorrow as Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie are injured.

Although it doesn’t sit well with many fans, I see Howe making just one change with Targett for Dummett. Although Burn and Guimaraes should be on the bench ready for their debut.

Newcastle kept their clean sheet at Elland Road, helped by an inspired performance from Fabian Schar. Jamaal Lascelles was very solid before being replaced through injury.

The captain is back in training and suffered no ill effects from his hit. With Dan Burn struggling with an infected toe, Howe could stick with the Lascelles/Schar partnership for one more game.

I don’t see Howe making major changes in the other areas. Guimaraes only arrived on Friday and will therefore be included in the squad as Howe hinted during his press conference. The midfield trio of Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock and Joelinton were excellent against Leeds.

Joelinton, like Lascelles and Dummett, was taken out early but Howe revealed he had recovered and was back in full training. Joelinton became one of Howe’s first names on the squad roster with his performances in midfield.

The first three should also keep their place. Allan Saint-Maximin is a guaranteed starter if he’s fit while Ryan Fraser has slowly carved out a place on the right. With Callum Wilson sidelined for the foreseeable future, Chris Wood will get a long stint on the team.
