Restaurant manager apologizes after waiter was made to ‘run to the store’

The customer, identified as Meredith, left the review on Tripadvisor for the Miller & Carter restaurant, near Hagley Road, between the Black Country and Birmingham. Meredith said they booked a table for five on a Saturday night for a birthday party – but it was a “disappointment”.

According to Birmingham Live, Meredith added that the waitress had “done her best for us”, however, “customers should be informed in advance and offered alternatives in advance”.

Miller & Carter in Hagley Road has a 4.5 rating on Tripadvisor – with over 1,300 independent traveler reviews. It is also listed as the second best restaurant to eat in Smethwick.

A recent reviewer described the food and service as “incredible”. While another added: “I hadn’t been to this place in a while. Took the family there and it was so much better than I remembered. Food was great, service was fast and our server Carol was such a pleasure.”

Still, Meredith gave it a “terrible” one-star rating in her review, with its title simply saying, “Saturday Night Birthday Disappointment.”

The full review read: “We booked a table for Saturday night for five people. First, there was no honey mustard and bacon dressing for our lettuce wedges. Second, when the main course was arrived there was no mashed corn or broccoli stalks but there wasn’t, when we asked they said they were sold out but no replacement they offered green beans that were like balls when they arrived.

“We ordered a second round of drinks, my wife never arrived and the waitress said someone was running into the shop for us. The waitress did her best for us but they shouldn’t run out of time. ‘ingredients on a Saturday night and if you do, the customer needs to be told ahead of time and then offered alternatives before they get to the table.

However, the restaurant’s assistant manager, identified as Luke on Tripadvisor, responded to the negative review. He apologized for the problems encountered during their visit – adding that it was an “uncommon case”.

His reply said: “Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are so sorry that your visit was not to your satisfaction and we left one of our guests disappointed with his dining experience. This was a case rare and we aim to do better in Please do not hesitate to contact us at for any other comments, concerns or suggestions you wish to share with us.

Miller & Carter on Hagley Road has 1,301 reviews on Tripadvisor, of which 1,079 are rated “excellent” or “very good.” A recent review said: “My wife and I dined here last Saturday night while visiting Birmingham.

“The place was full and had a great atmosphere, the service we received was excellent and the food fantastic, so a great evening was enjoyed as expected. Highly recommended.”

Another visitor said: “Visit Miller & Carter Hagley Road today, the food was amazing, the steaks cooked to perfection, the service was excellent from Sarah and the food was cooked amazingly by Diane, Congratulations to the whole team for today.”

James added: “I haven’t been to this place in a while. I took the family there and it was so much better than I remembered. The food was great, the service was quick and our server Carol was a such pleasure.”
