Tony Gill, who has worked at the historic Chester-le-Street Lumley hotel for 26 years and has been a restaurant manager for three years, has qualified for the UK Restaurant Manager of the Year final – the only runner-up from the North. .
Now he will travel to London’s Cafe Royal in early January to face nine other shortlisted entrants, all from London or Birmingham.
The awards, which have been running for 12 years, recognize and reward the best in the industry and finalists will be required to show their skills to a panel of judges from across the hospitality industry.
Previous winners have come from establishments such as the Gleneagles Hotel, Kerridge’s Bar and Grill and the Pollen Street Social – some of the most famous venues in the UK.
“It’s amazing to be the only participant from the North to make it to the final,” said Tony. “To be part of a group that includes representatives from restaurants such as The Ivy and Galvin at Windows is a huge honor.
“We have always tried to make the guest experience at Lumley Castle memorable and it is fantastic that has been recognised.
“I’m extremely excited about it all and now really looking forward to the experience of going to London on January 10 for the final.”
Gordon Cartwright, general manager of the Lumley Castle Hotel, praised Tony.

The Grade 1 listed Lumley Castle dates from the 14th century and became a hotel in the 1970s.
