“The food here is so good”
The woman sitting next to us at Bread in Common summed up the dishes coming out of her open kitchen perfectly.
In what simply reads on the menu – baby peppers, feta, oregano or scallop, XO sauce, spring onion – comes to the table with so many unexpected flavors.
And this woman should know what’s good, she just returned from a trip to Europe where she dined in Michelin starred restaurants.
As you may have gathered, you could be seated quite close to the diners next to you at this Freo institution.
The long dining experience at the table is by no means a negative point, having a sticky beak on some of the dishes you might want to order is a positive point, you might just have to go back to your outside voice to be heard.
Known for its home baked bread, you can’t eat here without sampling its namesake.
Nothing is cheap though, the butter alone will set you back $3, but the hot bread ($4 per person) with a generous helping of homemade salted butter is worth every penny.
At first glance, the Peppered Calamari, Beans, Cashews and Pomegranate ($32) looked like a bowl of green beans, but after digging in and devouring it, there was plenty of well-cooked calamari.
And while those morsels were delicious, it was the beans with a crispy char on top, along with the tangy sauce that coated them, that were the hero of the dish.
Brussels sprouts, curry, smoked yogurt, apple and mustard seeds ($26) was another veggie staple. The blackened Brusselsers were swimming in lots of smoked yogurt, and with the addition of small pieces of apple, each bite had the desired balance of sweet, creamy and tart.
The Chicken, Bok Choy, Sichuan, Basil ($35) was a celebration of chicken, with crispy yet juicy skinned pieces and bok choy enhanced by a rich broth and crunchy garlic strips.

The Verdict: The Bread in Common team can make it all right. The dishes are wholesome and full of flavor, the interiors are noble and charming, and the service is fast and friendly.
