In addition to the live, in-person races at Walt Disney World, there will again be virtual races for the 2023 Walt Disney World Marathon. Here is the official announcement regarding those from runDisney:

“Be part of a one-of-a-kind CourseDisney weekend as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Walt Disney World Marathon! Be one of the thousands of runners and participate virtually in the courses of your choice. So whether you’re hitting your favorite local trail, jogging around your neighborhood, or even running on a treadmill, you’ll be part of the magic.

Above are the prizes for the virtual races that will be part of the 2023 Walt Disney World Marathon.

In the past, I was in disbelief about these virtual races (to put it charitably), but I’ve definitely softened that prospect over the past couple of years. For one thing, visiting Walt Disney World is getting more and more expensive and race weekends are busy. If people want to enjoy events in a different and more convenient location, I say go for it. Especially if you’re primarily after medals and merchandise.

Talking about that, sacred cow are the AWESOME 2023 Walt Disney World Marathon running themes! Now, maybe I’m biased as a kid of the 90s, but I really don’t think so. These combine the old and the new in a way that works, with new retro designs. I could go on for several more paragraphs, but instead, I’ll just give you my “power rankings” theme for the 2023 Walt Disney World Marathon (best to worst):

  • Marathon
  • Goofy Challenge
  • 5K
  • Half marathon
  • [big gap]
  • Dopey Challenge
  • 10K

A part of me (the stupid part) really wants to do the Dopey Challenge again to collect all those shirt designs and medals. Another part (the slightly less stupid part) realize I could do Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge plus the 5K and “only” spend ~$535 vs. $660 on the Dopey. But then the dumbest part retorts, “Why don’t you just throw in the 10K for Dopey bragging rights then, silly?!”

Then there’s the really sensitive voice (this one is Sarah) who wonders if I should do all of this in the first place, and suggests that it might otherwise be unwise given my perpetual refusal to train. I still don’t know how this formidable battle of stupidity and sensitivity will play out. I guess we will all find out on registration day! 😉

Kidding aside (most of this wasn’t actually a joke, but let’s pretend it was) I really want to do at least one event during the 2023 Walt Disney World Marathon. to the fact that it’s the 30th anniversary of the event (I still regret not doing the 20th or 25th) and also coincides with the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World.

Seeing the effort that went into the recent Surprise Spring Weekend also renewed my excitement (judging by social media, those events looked fantastic), as did those retro 90s themes. ‘it’s fair to say there won’t be a shortage of retro 90s merchandise in the years to come, as millennials become prime demos and our nostalgia grows, there’s something to say for the more meaningful and “deserved” clothes. Either way, I’m excited and hope other runners are too – these are the best racing themes I’ve seen…maybe ever?!
